MPG to L/100km Converter

A road test praises the car for doing 32 MPG and you have no feel for whether that is good. Outside North America the sticker talks in liters per 100 km, and the two scales run in opposite directions. High MPG means a thrifty car, high liters per 100 km means a thirsty one. Glancing at both numbers and comparing them by instinct goes wrong every single time.

It is one division: 235.215 divided by the MPG figure. That constant comes from a US gallon of 3.785 liters and a mile of 1.609 km, rearranged onto a hundred kilometer basis. Because the relationship is reciprocal, the same box runs backwards with no trick involved. Type 7.84 into the MPG field and it returns 30. The label says MPG, but the arithmetic is symmetric.

Find out where your number came from first, because this box assumes a US gallon. The imperial gallon is larger and needs the constant 282.481, so 40 MPG from a British magazine is 7.06 liters per 100 km rather than the 5.88 you would read here. To reach kilometers per liter, divide 100 by the result. Everything is computed in your browser, with no data sent out.
