The CPTM (Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos) runs the suburban rail network across Greater São Paulo and works alongside the underground Metrô. For a rough travel time on a CPTM line, use t = n × (dwell + segment). Here n counts the stations between where you get on and where you get off, dwell is how long the train sits at each one (around 30–45 s), and segment is the typical run from one station to the next (about 2–3 min where stations are close together, more out toward the edges of the network).
There are 7 lines in all: 7 Rubi, 8 Diamante, 9 Esmeralda, 10 Turquesa, 11 Coral, 12 Safira and 13 Jade. They cover 273 km of track and carry roughly 3 million passengers per day. At peak the trains arrive every 4 to 15 minutes, and a single fare costs R$ 5.00 (integrated with the Metrô through the Bilhete Único). Operation is split: lines 8 and 9 went over to ViaMobilidade, and the rest stays under direct state operation.

FAQ
Is the CPTM fare the same as the Metrô? It is. Both charge R$ 5.00 and take the Bilhete Único, and you can switch between rail and underground for free as long as you stay inside the paid area.
Why is travel slower at peak hours? Doors stay open longer because more people are getting on and off, trains pile up behind signals, and the odd line incident can tack several minutes onto the nominal schedule.
Does the train run 24 hours? No. Trains usually run from about 4 a.m. to midnight, though a few lines stay open later when there is an event at Allianz Parque or the Sambadromo.
