Nautical Travel Time (ETA)
Compute a vessel's travel time (and estimated time of arrival, ETA), t = distance/speed, by dividing the route distance (in nautical miles) by the speed (in knots). Since 1 knot is exactly 1 nautical mile per hour, the result comes directly in hours. It is the basic calculation of passage planning and fuel estimation. Nautical travel time (ETA)
The most basic — and most used — calculation in navigation: time = distance ÷ speed. The beauty of the nautical system is that it closes on itself: the knot is defined as one nautical mile per hour, so dividing nautical miles by knots gives the time directly in hours, with no conversion step. From it come the ETA (estimated time of arrival), the fuel consumption estimate and the planning of watch rotations on an ocean passage. The nautical mile, in turn, equals one minute of arc of latitude (~1852 m), tying time, distance and the geometry of the Earth itself elegantly together.
