How craft beer names work

Craft beer naming inherits from two traditions: the irreverent, pun-loaded American craft wave of the 1990s-2000s (Founders, Stone, Lagunitas, Dogfish Head, Rogue) and the more historical European brewing register (Sierra Nevada, Sam Smith's, Pilsner Urquell). Brazilian craft has its own dialect since the boom of 2010+ — ABRACERVA today counts roughly 2,000 craft breweries across the country. Anchor brands include Colorado (Vesúvio, Indica — Marcelo Carneiro), Wäls (Belgian-leaning, Minas), Bodebrown (Curitiba, Samuel Cavalcanti), Roleta Russa, Schornstein (Pomerode), 4 Vilas, Dama Bier and Júpiter. International benchmarks: BrewDog (Scotland, "punk" craft), Stone Brewing, Sierra Nevada, Dogfish Head and Mikkel Borg Bjergsø's Mikkeller.

Naming patterns and how breweries pick them

  • Irreverent / one-wordFounders, Rogue, Lagunitas. Short, defiant, easy to print on a 33 cL label.
  • Bold metaphorStone, Anchor, Dogfish Head. A concrete noun that anchors a backstory.
  • Historical / topographicalSierra Nevada, Pilsner Urquell, Schornstein. Says "we are from somewhere".
  • PunHoppin' Hopelessly, Smartmouth, Bode. Works on Untappd, dies on a chalkboard.
  • Style in the nameColorado Indica, Wäls Trippel, Roleta Russa APA. Tells the consumer what they are buying before the IBU number does.

Style vocabulary you can borrow

Brazilian craft drinkers know the style names; using one in the brand or sub-brand is a shortcut to expectation. The current favourites are IPA (India Pale Ale, the export-bitter from 19th-century England), NEIPA (New England IPA — hazy, juicy, lower bitterness; born in Vermont c. 2003 with The Alchemist's Heady Topper), Stout (Guinness is the original, 1759), Imperial Stout, Pilsner (Plzeň, Czech Republic, 1842), Witbier (Belgian wheat, Hoegaarden), Sour (Berliner Weisse, Lambic, Gose), and fruited sour — where Brazilian breweries lean on local fruits (maracujá, jabuticaba, caju). The CRBE (Concurso Brasileiro de Estilos de Cerveja) judges them annually under BJCP guidelines.

Craft vs. industrial, regulation and labelling

The US Brewers Association defines craft as small (under 6 million barrels/year) and independent — not majority-owned by a non-craft brewer. That second clause matters: AB InBev (the Belgian-Brazilian conglomerate behind Brahma and Skol) has acquired Colorado, Wäls, Bohemia and Patagônia — they are still "craft" in style but no longer in ownership. In Brazil, every brewery must register with MAPA (Ministério da Agricultura) and label with style, IBU (bitterness), ABV (alcohol), volume and recommended serving temperature.

FAQ

Should I register the name as a trademark? Yes — file with INPI under class 32 (beer). Without that you cannot stop another brewery from using the same name on a label.

Should the style appear in the name? Usually yes for a sub-brand (Colorado Indica IPA) and optionally for the house. It accelerates recognition on a shelf with 40 cans.

Does alliteration work for beer? Yes — short alliterative names (Hoppin' Hopelessly, Bell's Best Brown, Sierra Nevada) print well on a 12 oz label and survive the bar shout.

Is any data sent to a server? No. The fragment lists are bundled with the page and the random recombination runs in your browser — nothing leaves the device.
