Finding the next February 29

You need to know when the next February 29 lands: a four-year contract, a yearly billing job that must not fire on a date the calendar skips, or simply a relative born on the 29th who only gets a real birthday once in a while. The rule sounds trivial until the century exception shows up and quietly breaks the arithmetic you had in your head.

A year is a leap year when it divides by 4, except that multiples of 100 are skipped unless they also divide by 400. That is why 1900 had no February 29 while 2000 did. The search here starts at the year you typed, not at the year after it. Type 2024 and you get 2024 back, because 2024 already is a leap year. To skip past it, type 2025.

The gap between leap years is not always four. Around a century year that fails the 400 test it stretches to eight, as it did from 1896 to 1904 and as it will from 2096 to 2104. Worth checking if your schedule crosses 2100. Everything is computed in your browser, nothing is uploaded. The page only reports the year, it does not validate dates or count deadlines.

Frequently asked questions

Is 2100 a leap year?
No. It is a multiple of 100 but not of 400, so February 2100 has 28 days. The first leap year after 2096 is 2104.
Why did typing 2024 return 2024?
The search includes the year you entered, and 2024 is itself a leap year. Enter the following year to jump to the next one.
What is the longest gap between two leap years?
Eight years. It happens when a century year is not divisible by 400, like the jump from 1896 to 1904.
