CNH cards: the structure of Brazil's driver's licence

The CNH (Carteira Nacional de Habilitação — National Driver's Licence) is Brazil's federal driver's licence, issued by each state's Detran but under unified CONTRAN standards. The physical "card" is the printed CNH, currently produced in polycarbonate with security holograms — a format adopted in 2013 to replace the older paper-and-laminate version.

This generator produces fictional CNH card data (driver name, CPF, RG, Renach, category, validity, parents' names) for testing forms, mock insurance flows, QA fixtures, and tutorials. The numbers are formatted correctly but do not exist in any Detran database — never use them to impersonate a driver or pass off as real ID.

Anatomy of the CNH card

Physical dimensions: 8.5 × 5.5 cm (the same as a credit card), so it fits a wallet. The front shows: photo, full name, category (A/B/C/D/E or combinations), issue date, expiry date, registration number, RG, CPF, parents' names, place of birth, Renach number, and signature. The back carries observations (e.g., "must wear glasses", "authorised paid activity") and a points-accumulation strip.

Categories and EAR

  • A — motorcycles and motorised tricycles.
  • B — passenger cars and light vehicles up to 3,500 kg / 8 passengers.
  • C — trucks above 3,500 kg.
  • D — passenger vehicles with more than 8 occupants (buses, vans).
  • E — combinations (truck + trailer, articulated vehicles).
  • AB / AC / AD / AE — multi-category combos.
  • EAR (Exerce Atividade Remunerada) — paid-activity authorisation; required for taxi, ride-share, delivery, school bus. Granted via an additional course.

CNH-e (digital CNH), PPD, and international

The CNH Digital (CNH-e), authorised by CONTRAN Resolution 720/2017, lives inside the Carteira Digital de Trânsito app (gov.br). It contains a QR Code that traffic agents scan to verify authenticity in real time — legally equivalent to the physical card.

The PPD (Permissão Para Dirigir) is the provisional licence issued after passing the medical, psychological, and practical exams. It is valid for one year; if the driver collects no serious infraction during that window, it converts to a definitive CNH. The International CNH (PID), based on the 1968 Vienna Convention, is issued by Detran-RJ and valid for one year abroad.

Points, suspension, and cassation

Law 14,071/2020 changed the points-suspension thresholds. Today the cap depends on how many serious infractions you carry: 20 points with three or more grave infractions, 30 points with one or two grave, 40 points with only light/medium infractions. Points expire 12 months after the offence.

  • Suspension: temporary loss of driving rights. Driving while suspended is a crime under CTB article 307.
  • Cassation: full revocation. Triggers: DUI conviction, racing on public roads, hit-and-run, driving while suspended.
  • Renach: the national driver registration number, unique and lifelong — it follows the driver across all states and CNH renewals.

FAQ

Are the generated CNHs valid? No. The CPF, RG, Renach, and registration numbers follow Brazilian formats but do not exist in any Detran database. They will not pass official verification.

Can I print this card at home and use it? No. Only the issuing Detran can produce a valid physical CNH (polycarbonate with holograms). A home-printed copy is a forged document under Penal Code article 297 and a criminal offence.

Are these safe for an insurance-quote sandbox? Yes — that is exactly the use case. Mock fixtures, QA tests, and tutorials where you need realistic but obviously-fake data are the intended scope.

What's the difference between PPD and CNH? The PPD is the provisional licence (1 year). After 12 months without grave/severe infractions, it becomes a definitive CNH — issued automatically by Detran with no extra exam.

Does the CNH Digital replace the physical card? Yes — legally equivalent. The QR Code in the app is signed by Serpro and proves authenticity. You can drive with just the app, though many drivers still carry both.
