Download time follows time = size / speed, with a unit catch: 1 byte = 8 bits. Internet plans are sold in Mbps (megabit per second) while files are measured in MB (megabyte), so 100 Mbps equals just 12.5 MB/s of theoretical throughput. Example: a 4 GB ISO on a 100 Mbps link takes 4000 MB ÷ 12.5 MB/s = 320 s ≈ 5.3 min in theory. Real-world speed sits at 80–90% of that due to TCP overhead, latency and packet loss. Mobile generations span 1G/2G/3G/4G/5G, with 5G peaking at 1–10 Gbps. In Brazil (2024), fiber broadband averages 150–300 Mbps in urban areas while rural links still range 5–20 Mbps.

Applications: backups, deploys and game updates

The formula helps plan large uploads or cloud backups, pick the right internet plan, estimate container or VM deploys over a constrained link, and forecast game updates — Call of Duty patches now exceed 200 GB, which on a 50 Mbps connection takes over 200 · 1024 · 8 / 50 / 60 ≈ 9 hours. IT teams also use it to budget OS image distribution and software rollouts.

FAQ

Why is my download slower than the contracted speed? ISPs sell peak speed; real throughput drops with Wi-Fi interference, distant servers, ISP congestion and protocol overhead. Expect 80–90% of the nominal rate at best.

MB or MiB? Marketing uses decimal (1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes); operating systems often display binary (1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes). The ~5% gap shows up on disks and downloads.

Does upload speed match download? Usually no — most residential plans are asymmetric (e.g. 300/150 Mbps). Symmetric fiber is common in Brazil's newer FTTH offers.
