ETA: Estimated Time of Arrival

ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival) is the clock time a vehicle, shipment, or process is predicted to reach its destination. The basic relation is ETA = now + (remaining_distance / average_speed). Behind the scenes, modern GPS apps run routing algorithms like Dijkstra, A* and Contraction Hierarchies (used by Google Maps, OSRM, Waze), then layer on real-time traffic heatmaps, tolls, ferries and weather. Say you have 120 km left at a 60 km/h average: that is 2 h, so a 5:00 PM start puts your ETA at 7:00 PM. The term goes back to 1950s aviation and maritime navigation (Federal Aviation), and it has a few siblings: ETD (departure), ETO (over) and ETI (intermediate).

Applications and context

You will find ETA at the heart of GPS navigation (Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze). It also drives ride-hailing and food delivery, where matching algorithms at Uber and iFood weigh ETA when assigning a driver. Add to that commercial aviation, where it gets filed in flight plans, and road logistics through the TMS platforms carriers rely on. How accurate it lands comes down to live traffic feeds and the historical patterns for that time of day.

FAQ

Why does ETA keep changing? The estimate gets refreshed constantly as traffic shifts, the route is recalculated, and your speed varies. When it jumps by 5 minutes, there is usually fresh congestion somewhere ahead.

ETA vs ETD vs ATA? ETA is the estimated arrival and ETD the estimated departure. ATA is the actual time of arrival, logged after the fact so it can feed performance metrics.

How do delivery apps predict ETA? They blend routing distance with current traffic, models of how long the restaurant takes to prep, and how fast couriers have moved in the past. On top of that deterministic baseline they usually run a layer of machine learning.
