Final grade needed to pass

The score you still need on a remaining assessment comes out to needed = (target · n_total − Σ existing) / n_remaining. Say you're after an average of 7 across four tests and you've already scored 6, 8 and 7. The last test then needs (7·4 − 21) / 1 = 7. If the tests don't all count equally, weight each score first and divide by the total weight: needed = (target − Σ(score · weight)) / weight_remaining. Watch for two cases. The answer can't go above the maximum grade (10 or 100, usually), and anything below zero means you've already clinched the average.

Applications and context

Handy when you're mapping out exam week, weighing how hard to push on a final, or projecting where you'll land on makeup exams or final tests (in Brazil, governed by school-level rules under LDB Lei 9.394/1996). It also helps for keeping an eye on your university GPA and guessing the score you'd need in entrance exams like ENEM or in college finals scored under IRT (TRI).

FAQ

What if the result is above the maximum grade? Then the target is mathematically out of reach with what's left to score. You either lower the target or accept missing the average.

What if it's negative or zero? The average is already in the bag. Even a zero on the final leaves you above the target.

How do I include weights? Apply each score's weight before you add them up. A final worth 40% pulls twice as hard as a quiz worth 20%.
