ENEM scoring uses IRT, not raw percentage
Brazil's ENEM doesn't just count how many answers you got right. It runs your responses through Item Response Theory (IRT), where every question carries its own weight based on difficulty, discrimination, and a guessing parameter. Nailing the easy and medium items consistently counts for more than landing a few hard ones by chance, because the coerência do gabarito (pattern coherence) docks you for lucky guesses. Each of the four area scores is calibrated to a population mean near 500 and a standard deviation of 100. This averaging tool lets you work out what you still need across the remaining areas to land on a target overall mean. Example: if you're aiming for an average of 760 and have already scored 720 and 780 in two areas, you need to average (760·4 − 720 − 780) / 2 = 770 in the two that are left.
Applications and benchmarks
Scores feed into SISU (federal universities), ProUni (scholarships at private universities) and FIES (student loans). Cutoffs vary a lot by course. Medicine at USP and UFRJ tends to sit around 780–810, the top 0.5 percentile; Engineering at the leading federals runs 720–760; Law and Business at mid-tier federals fall closer to 680–720. Mock exams (simulados) from Khan Academy, Descomplica and the ENEM organizers are a good way to see how you're tracking against those numbers as the year goes on.
FAQ
Why is my IRT score lower than the raw percentage suggests? Because IRT punishes inconsistency. When you miss easy items but get hard ones right, the model reads that as guessing and pulls down your theta parameter.
Should I skip very hard questions? Often, yes. Lock in the easy and medium items first, where you're confident, and only come back to the hard ones if you have time left. The essay (redação) is graded on its own 0–1000 scale.
How precise is this averaging tool? It gives you a plain arithmetic estimate of the area means you'd need. Real ENEM IRT scores aren't linear, so treat the result as a planning target, not a promise.
Does the essay count in the average? Under SISU, each university sets its own weights. Plenty of them double the essay's weight for Law and Humanities courses.
