Fuel consumption in km/L: formula and benchmarks

Consumption is just distance driven divided by the fuel you burned to cover it: km/L = km_driven / liters_filled. Example: a car that did 450 km on 30 L comes out at 450/30 = 15 km/L, and a bigger number means a thriftier car. Want to check your own? Fill the tank until the pump clicks off, zero the trip odometer, drive the way you normally do until it's nearly empty, then top it up again and divide the kilometers on the trip meter by the liters you just put in.

Typical values and applications

Entry-level cars in Brazil run around 12–15 km/L on gasoline and drop to 8–11 km/L on ethanol, which makes sense since ethanol packs about 30% less energy per liter. Hybrids climb into the 18–25 km/L range, and electric cars, once you convert to an energy-equivalent figure, land somewhere around 60–100 km/L. The official numbers come from the Inmetro PBE Veicular labeling program. This is handy if you're a rideshare driver figuring out what fuel costs you every day, planning a highway trip, or trying to decide which flex-fuel option to pour in.

FAQ

Why does real consumption differ from the manual? The numbers in the brochure are measured on controlled test cycles. Out in the real world, traffic, the AC, soft tires, how much you're hauling and a heavy right foot can knock 10–25% off your km/L.

Highway or city, which is more efficient? Highway usually wins by 20–30%, because cruising at a steady speed skips the heavy fuel losses you get from constant stop-and-go.

How do I convert mpg to km/L? Take the U.S. mpg figure and multiply by 0.4251, so 30 mpg works out to about 12.75 km/L.

Does tire pressure really matter? It does. Tires running low on air create more rolling resistance, and that alone can cost you 3–5% in km/L.

Heat Rate

Calculate the heat rate of a power plant, HR = 360000 ÷ η, dividing 360000 by the thermal efficiency in percent. The result, in kJ/kWh, is the fuel energy consumed to generate one kilowatt-hour of electricity — the inverse of efficiency expressed on an energy basis. It is the power-generation industry's standard metric: the lower the heat rate, the more efficient and economical the plant.
