Two main types cover most of the field. An HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) like the Toyota Prius runs a small battery (1-2 kWh) you can't plug in, good for maybe 4-6 km of pure electric driving, which is really about smoothing out city stop-and-go. You can use it to pick the drive mode that stretches efficiency furthest, or to put together emissions numbers for fleet reporting. It matters for incentives too, since plenty of government schemes set a minimum electric range to qualify (40 km in some EU programs, for instance).
