Hybrid Vehicle Range by Type and Mode
A hybrid pairs an internal combustion engine with an electric drivetrain, so its total range is just the fuel range plus the electric range: total_km = tank_L × km_per_L + battery_kwh × km_per_kwh. How that total splits between the two sides comes down to the hybrid's architecture and whichever drive mode you've picked (EV, Eco, Sport, Hybrid).
Two main types cover most of the field. An HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) like the Toyota Prius runs a small battery (1-2 kWh) you can't plug in, good for maybe 4-6 km of pure electric driving, which is really about smoothing out city stop-and-go. A PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid) like the BYD Song DM-i carries a much bigger pack (10-30 kWh), enough for 50-100 km on electricity alone and up to 800 km once you factor in the combustion engine. A full EV sits at the other end, with a 40-100 kWh pack and no fuel to fall back on.
Applications
Working out hybrid range is useful in a few practical ways. It tells a driver whether the daily commute fits inside EV mode and skips the gas pump, and it helps weigh the cost of owning a PHEV against an HEV. You can use it to pick the drive mode that stretches efficiency furthest, or to put together emissions numbers for fleet reporting. It matters for incentives too, since plenty of government schemes set a minimum electric range to qualify (40 km in some EU programs, for instance).
FAQ
What is the difference between HEV, PHEV, and BEV? An HEV tops itself up from regenerative braking and engine load, never from a plug. A PHEV keeps that but adds a charging port and a bigger battery. A BEV (battery electric) drops the combustion engine entirely.
Should I always drive a PHEV in EV mode? Not really. On a long highway run, hybrid mode actually comes out ahead, because the engine settles into its sweet-spot RPM and the battery avoids deep cycles. EV mode is where the car wins around town.
How long does the PHEV battery last? A modern lithium-ion PHEV pack is built to hold up for 8-10 years or 160,000 km while losing under 20% of its capacity. Warranties from Toyota, BYD, and Hyundai typically cover about that span.
