Fuel cost and consumption: formulas explained
Fuel consumption is distance per unit of volume, consumption = distance / volume (km/L in Brazil, mpg in the U.S.). The European spec flips it into fuel efficiency, L/100km = 100 / (km/L). Trip cost follows from cost = (distance / km_per_L) · price_per_L. Take an example: a 500 km trip in a car that does 12 km/L, with gasoline at R$ 6.00/L → 500/12 ≈ 41.67 L → R$ 250. Brazilian regular gasoline (gasolina C) is blended with 27% anhydrous ethanol. There's also the 70% rule. Ethanol only pays off when its price sits at or below 70% of gasoline's, since it carries roughly 30% less energy per liter.
Typical consumption and applications
A typical popular car in Brazil runs 12–15 km/L on gasoline and 8–11 km/L on ethanol, while diesel trucks manage 3–4 km/L. The calculation earns its keep with rideshare drivers (on Uber/99 the driver pays for the fuel and has to subtract it from earnings), road trip planning, splitting costs among passengers, and logistics. Bear in mind that real consumption shifts with traffic, air conditioning, tire pressure, and the way you drive. Highway runs usually come out 20–30% more efficient than city ones.
FAQ
How do I know my car's real km/L? Fill the tank, reset the trip odometer, drive until it's nearly empty, then fill up again. Divide the km you covered by the liters you added.
Is ethanol always cheaper? Not really, which is why the 70% rule exists. If E/G ≤ 0.70, ethanol pays off; above that, gasoline wins on cost per km.
Why does the AC reduce mileage? The compressor draws power from the engine, which usually means 5–10% more fuel burned with the AC running.
How do I convert mpg to km/L? Multiply mpg by 0.4251. So a car rated at 30 mpg works out to about 12.75 km/L.

How much will fuel cost?
Before hitting the road, having a sense of the fuel spend helps you close the budget without surprises at the pump. The calculator runs the math from three pretty simple numbers: the distance, your vehicle's consumption and the price per litre.
The result comes in full: how many litres the trip will burn, the total cost and the cost per kilometre driven. It works for planning a trip, splitting the expense among passengers, comparing routes or simply knowing how much the car weighs on your wallet each journey.
Change any value (distance, consumption or price) and the cost recomputes on its own, which makes it easy to simulate different scenarios. The whole calculation runs in the browser.
