Garden Plants Coverage

Computes number of seedlings to cover a garden by spacing.

โ€”

Ground Cover Seedlings per Square Meter

For a lawn or a ground cover bed, you find the number of seedlings from N = A × D, where A is the planting area in m² and D is how many seedlings you want per m². Plant on a square grid with spacing s in meters and the density works out to D = 1 / s². If you stagger the rows in a quincunx pattern instead, bump that figure up by 1.15 to cover the offset.

Depending on the species, you'll see densities anywhere from 9 to 25 seedlings per m². Korean lawngrass (Zoysia tenuifolia) usually goes in at 25/m² with 20×20 cm spacing, whereas emerald zoysia (Zoysia japonica) sits at 16/m² (25×25 cm). Living ground covers like pansy (amor-perfeito), periwinkle (vinca) and morning glory (ipoméia) tend to run 9–16/m². Whatever you choose, order 5–10% extra to cover the seedlings you lose at transplant.

Applications

Landscapers and homeowners lean on this to price nursery orders, lay out irrigation zones, work out cost per m² and stage the planting in waves. It also settles the choice between rolled sod (grama em placas), plugs (grama em mudas) and seed when you care about how fast the ground fills in. Plugs set at quincunx spacing usually close the gaps in 90–120 days.

FAQ

Square grid or quincunx? A quincunx with offset rows eats about 15% more seedlings, but the canopy closes sooner and there's less room for weeds to push up between plants.

Can I mix species in the same bed? You can, as long as their growth rate and sun needs line up. Pair a fast cover like vinca with a slower one like grama and the quick species usually takes over inside a single season.

How much extra should I order? Go 5–10% over the number you calculated. That spare lets you toss the broken or weak seedlings and fill any gaps when you go back after 30–45 days.
