Pruning frequency by plant type
How often you prune comes down to the species and what you're after. Ornamental shrubs: 2-3x per year, for formation and maintenance. Coffee and citrus: once a year during winter, when vegetative activity drops to a minimum and the risk of infection is lower. Roses: one heavy pruning in late winter, with spent flowers removed across the rest of the year. Hedges: a monthly trim through the growing season to hold their shape. Fruit trees: prune after harvest so the branches renew for next season. Cutting during dormancy funnels energy into fewer buds, which gives you stronger shoots.
Applications
It shows up in home gardening, commercial agriculture, professional landscaping, orchard management and nurseries. The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA) publishes pruning guides for the major crops. Get the timing right and you see it in better yield, more flowering, healthier plants and cleaner structure.
FAQ
Can I prune any time of year? No. Cutting while the plant is in active growth wastes energy and leaves it open to pests. Pruning in the dormant season is the safer bet for most species.
How much to remove? As a rule, no more than 1/3 of the canopy in a single session. Go past that and you stress the plant.
What about flowering shrubs? Wait and prune right after they flower. Doing it earlier wipes out the season's buds.
Do I need to disinfect tools? Yes. A wipe of 70% alcohol between plants keeps disease from spreading, which matters most with citrus and roses.
