Genie Wish Granting Time (Fiction)
Here’s a calculator that guesses, just for laughs, how long a genie needs to grant a wish depending on how hard it is (easy / medium / hard / impossible). The fantasy math behind it is basically time = base_minutes × difficulty_multiplier. Genies (also called djinn, jinn, or ifrit) trace back to pre-Islamic Arabian folklore, where they were spirits made of smokeless fire who sometimes helped and just as often played tricks. What really turned them into pop-culture icons was One Thousand and One Nights, above all the tale of “Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp,” and then Disney’s 1992 Aladdin, where Robin Williams’ Genie locked in the three-wishes rule for a whole generation.
Tabletop RPGs such as Dungeons & Dragons sort them by element (djinni of air, efreeti of fire, marid of water, dao of earth), and each kind grants wishes its own way. Then there’s the warning everyone knows by heart: be careful what you wish for. A poorly worded wish is one of horror’s oldest tropes, and W. W. Jacobs’ The Monkey’s Paw (1902) is the case in point. It’s also why a genie’s “granting time” might really be the time it spends hunting for the loophole.
Applications
Pacing an RPG session, sparking an improv scene, running a creative-writing exercise about wishes gone wrong, playing party games (“what would you wish for?”), or writing any story where a magical contract needs a delivery time that sounds believable.
FAQ
Do genies really exist? Nothing science can point to says so. This is folklore and fiction, so don’t go rubbing strange lamps and waiting for results.
Why is “impossible” even an option? Because even genies have rules. No killing, no resurrecting, no making people fall in love with you, at least if you go by Disney lore.
How do I avoid the “monkey’s paw” trap? Draft your wish the way a lawyer drafts a contract, then read it through twice. Or honestly, maybe just skip the wishing altogether.
