Honey Yield per Hive in Flowering Season

A handy working model is H = Y × F, where H is the honey produced per hive (kg), Y is the baseline annual yield (kg/year) and F is a flowering factor (roughly 0.3 for weak, 0.6 for medium, 1.0 for strong blooms). In Brazil an adult Apis mellifera colony brings in 25–50 kg/year when the floral season is good, and commercial apiaries sitting near big eucalyptus or orange groves can push past 60 kg.

One reason Brazilian beekeeping does well is the variety of apicultural flora. Depending on the region, the main nectar sources are cipó-uva (Serjania), eucalyptus (Eucalyptus), orange (Citrus sinensis), assa-peixe (Vernonia) and aroeira (Schinus terebinthifolius). IBGE/Apicultura Brasil figures put the country above 35,000 tons of honey in 2023. ANVISA RDC 11/2000 lays out identity and quality standards for honey, and CIDASC (Santa Catarina) and IBAMA handle sanitary inspection and the protection of native fauna.

Applications

Beekeepers run this calculation to plan supers, line up extractions, estimate the revenue from each apiary, and weigh whether to move hives around (transhumança) to chase a particular bloom. Cooperatives use the same model to project how much they can supply packers in bulk and to gauge how a weather event might dent regional production.

FAQ

Why does yield vary so much between hives? Several things stack up at once: queen genetics, how strong the colony is, varroa pressure, the distance to nectar sources and how much it rains during flowering. Two hives only 100 m apart can easily come out 30% apart.

When should I add a super? Add it once 7 of the 10 brood frames are occupied and the bees begin packing nectar into the outer combs. Wait too long and the colony swarms, which costs you part of the harvest.

Does Africanized bee behavior change yield? It does. Brazilian Africanized Apis mellifera scutellata hybrids forage more aggressively and frequently out-produce European strains, though they call for careful management and good protective equipment.
