Eid al-Fitr: the Festival of Breaking the Fast

Eid al-Fitr falls on 1 Shawwal, the first day of the tenth month in the Hijri (Islamic) calendar, and it marks the end of Ramadan’s month of fasting from dawn to sunset. Since the Hijri calendar is purely lunar, running about 354 days, the Gregorian date creeps roughly 10–11 days earlier each year. By tradition the new month only starts once someone sights the crescent moon.

The day opens with Salat al-Eid, a special communal prayer held outdoors or in large mosques shortly after sunrise. Beforehand, every able Muslim must pay Zakat al-Fitr, an obligatory alms of food or its cash equivalent, given so the poor can celebrate too. After that the festivities run for three days: family visits, sweets like ma’amoul and baklava, new clothes, and gifts of money (Eidi) for the children.

FAQ

Why does the calculated date sometimes differ by one day from a mosque’s announcement? The astronomical conversion only gives an approximate Gregorian date. Each community can push Eid a day earlier or later based on the local crescent moon sighting (rukyah).

Is Eid al-Fitr the same as Eid al-Adha? No. Eid al-Fitr closes Ramadan on 1 Shawwal. Eid al-Adha, the “Festival of Sacrifice,” comes about 70 days later on 10 Dhu al-Hijjah and commemorates Abraham’s sacrifice.

Is Eid a public holiday in Brazil? Not at the federal level, though plenty of companies offer flexible leave and a few municipalities recognize it for civic purposes.
