Haiku Verse Counter

The haiku (俞句) is a traditional Japanese poetic form. Each one has exactly three verses (lines) and follows a strict 5-7-5 syllable pattern (technically on, or morae), so 17 syllables in all. To get the verse total for any number of haiku, use verses = 3 × haiku_count. For the syllable total, it's syllables = 17 × haiku_count.

The form took shape in 17th-century Japan with Matsuo Bashō (1644–1694). He took what had been the opening stanza (hokku) of longer collaborative renga sequences and turned it into an art that stood on its own. A classical haiku usually carries a kigo (seasonal reference) and a kireji (cutting word), the latter cutting a pause between two contrasting images. In Brazil it was Paulo Leminski who brought haiku to a wide readership, with his 1983 collection Caprichos & Relaxos, alongside the Grêmio Haicai Ipê and ZinHaikai (São Paulo) communities.

Applications

It helps when you're planning a poetry workshop and need to estimate verses for an anthology, when a literature teacher is putting together class exercises, when a publisher works out page counts for a haiku collection, or when a contest organizer needs to measure submission length. Writers also lean on it to track output during NaPoWriMo and similar challenges, and typesetters use it for chapbooks with strict line counts.

FAQ

Is a haiku always 17 syllables in Portuguese or English? Not necessarily. The 5-7-5 mora pattern belongs to Japanese phonology, and many Western haijin (haiku poets) care more about brevity and the seasonal/contrast structure than about hitting an exact syllable count.

What is the difference between haiku and senryū? Both use the 5-7-5 form. The difference is in subject: senryū turns to human nature and irony, whereas haiku traditionally evokes nature and the seasons.

Does Bashō's famous frog poem fit the 5-7-5 pattern? It does. furu ike ya / kawazu tobikomu / mizu no oto lands on 5-7-5 morae exactly.
