Portuguese Quadra Verse Counter
The Portuguese quadra is a four-verse strophe, a quatrain, and it traditionally rhymes ABAB (alternating) or ABBA (embraced). Most quadras are written in redondilha maior (seven metrical syllables), with the redondilha menor (five syllables) showing up less often. Counting verses is straightforward: for any number of quadras, verses = 4 × quadra_count, and the syllable total in redondilha maior is syllables = 28 × quadra_count.
The quadra is the backbone of popular poetry in Portuguese. It comes down from the medieval Galician-Portuguese cantigas and trovas that circulated in the courts and along pilgrimage routes from the 12th century on, and it still rules the oral tradition. You hear it in quadras populares, in festas juninas songbooks, and in the Brazilian repente and cordel. Fernando Pessoa worked the form heavily; his Quadras ao Gosto Popular, published after his death in 1965, gathers hundreds of quatrains in the folk register.
Applications
Songbook editors use it to plan festas juninas anthologies, and cordel publishers to work out chapbook length. Teachers reach for it when assigning poetry exercises tied to Brazilian folklore, copywriters when shaping slogans in popular meter, and researchers when cataloguing oral tradition corpora. It also helps anyone writing a greeting card or putting together a wedding toast.
FAQ
What is the difference between a quadra and a quartet? Both run to four lines. The difference is context: a “quartet” (quarteto) is usually a stanza inside a longer poem, like the two quartets of a sonnet, whereas a “quadra” tends to be a four-line poem that stands on its own.
Does every quadra rhyme? Traditional popular quadras almost always rhyme ABAB or ABBA. Modern literary quadras are looser, sometimes turning to free verse or partial (toante) rhyme.
What is redondilha maior? It is a line of seven poetic syllables, the most common metre in Portuguese popular poetry. You count up to the last stressed syllable, following the Castilian/Iberian tradition.
