Yards to meters with an exact factor

The fabric spec is in yards, a football broadcast talks about a 40-yard drive, and the pool manual lists its length in yards. You want that in meters, the unit your intuition actually works in. It is one multiplication, but almost nobody keeps the factor in their head. Enter the number of yards and read the metric equivalent as you type it in.

The factor is 0.9144, and it is not a rounded approximation. Under the 1959 international yard and pound agreement, one yard is defined as exactly 0.9144 meter, which also fixed the inch at exactly 25.4 mm. Every imperial length has been derived from the meter ever since. A hundred yards is therefore 91.44 m, which is why a football field's playing area is almost but not quite 91 meters.

To go the other way, divide by 0.9144 or multiply by 1.0936. This page converts in one direction only and shows up to six decimal places, far more precision than any tape measure delivers, so round to the centimeter for fabric. One buying caution: shops often sell cloth by the linear meter at a fixed bolt width, so converting the length alone is not enough when the width differs.
