In English-speaking countries, height comes in feet and inches, the 5'10" style. For anyone raised on the metric system, it's just confusing. This converter bridges the two worlds, turning feet and inches into metres, and the other way round too.

Can I choose how many decimal places the result has?

No, the precision is fixed. Metres always come out with four decimal places, in the 1.7780 m style, and the reverse direction prints whole feet followed by inches to two places, in the 5' 10.08" format. The page carries no rounding field and no precision selector. If you need a different level of detail, round the figure after copying it: four decimals of a metre already resolve well below the millimetre.

If I type in the feet box, does the metres box change on its own?

It stays put. The page holds two independent converters, each with its own output. The top one takes feet and inches and returns metres; the bottom one takes metres and returns feet and inches. Editing one never updates the other, so do not be thrown when the two results on screen disagree with each other, since they came from different inputs. The starting values, 5 feet 10 inches above and 1.78 m below, are examples only.

Why do 5 feet 10 inches give 1.7780 m rather than 1.78 m?

Because the conversion is exact, not rounded: one inch equals 0.0254 m by definition, and 70 inches come to precisely 1.778 m. The 1.78 m figure people quote is that same number already rounded to the centimetre. Going the other way the asymmetry becomes visible: enter 1.78 m and the answer reads 5' 10.08", since 1.78 m carries 0.08 of an inch more than an exact 5 feet 10.
