Kennel Minimum Area by Dog Size

Calculates minimum kennel area based on dog size and number of animals.

Kennel area by dog size: legal and welfare minimums

Brazilian welfare guidelines and breeder federations tie kennel area to the dog's size. A dog up to 25 kg needs 6 m² of kennel + 4 m² of solarium; one above 25 kg needs 10 m² + 6 m²; and giant breeds like the Great Dane, São Bernardo or Fila need 15 m²+ with a solarium to match. The Brazilian standard ABNT NBR 13903 covers safe playground equipment, which often gets applied to dog parks and recreation areas too. Example: a breeder keeping 4 medium Labradors needs 4 × (10 + 6) = 64 m² of kennel structure, on top of the circulation corridors and an isolation kennel. Cramped kennels lead to stereotypic pacing, aggression, and zoonotic risk where waste piles up.

Practical applications

It helps licensed breeders (criadouros) hit CBKC (Confederação Brasileira de Cinofilia) standards, lets pet hotels and dog daycare work out capacity and pricing, gives vacation dog hotels ("hotel de cães férias") a way to size per-stay rooms, helps veterinary clinics lay out isolation areas, and keeps municipal pounds within CONCEA welfare standards. Underestimating the area is the single most common reason kennels flunk a vigilância sanitária inspection.

FAQ

Can two compatible dogs share a kennel? Yes, as long as they cohabit peacefully. But you add the minimum areas together rather than sharing one. Two 25 kg dogs need about 16 m² in total, not 10.

What about the solarium? The outdoor solarium has to catch direct sunlight at some point in the day, and it needs shade plus drinking water on hand at all times.

Is concrete floor okay? Concrete is easy to keep clean, but it is cold and hard, so add raised beds and rubber mats. A slight 2% slope lets urine drain off to a grate.

How often must kennels be cleaned? At least twice a day, with a full disinfection once daily. Use quaternary ammonium or chlorhexidine, and never phenols, which are toxic to dogs.
