Onam: ten days of harvest, flowers and feast in Kerala
Onam is Kerala's state festival, and for the Malayali people of southwest India it's the cultural high point of the year. It runs for ten days in the Malayalam month of Chingam, a stretch that falls across August and September on the Gregorian calendar. What sets the date is the lunisolar Malayalam calendar. The peak comes on Thiruvonam, the day the Moon crosses the asterism Shravana (nakshatra Thiruvonam) within Chingam, after nine days of build-up that begin on Atham.
The story behind it is the yearly homecoming of King Mahabali, a legendary asura king. His reign over Kerala had been just and prosperous until the god Vishnu, taking the form of his Vamana avatar, banished him to the netherworld. Mahabali won the right to visit his people once a year, and Onam marks that visit, which is why the feeling is one of welcome and plenty instead of grief. A few traditions carry the festival. There's the pookalam, the intricate floral mandala laid out on the floor of every home; the sadhya, a vegetarian banquet of up to 26 dishes served on a banana leaf; and the vallam kali, those remarkable snake-boat races on Kerala's backwaters, the Nehru Trophy on Punnamada Lake chief among them.
Applications
Malayali communities around the world lean on Onam date calculators to line up cultural programmes, book sadhya catering, arrange travel for the boat races and set dates for pookalam competitions. UNESCO recognises elements of Kerala's ritual arts tied to Onam as intangible cultural heritage. Here in Brazil, the Indian Embassy and Malayali associations in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro run annual Onam dinners that pull in the broader Indian diaspora.
FAQ
Why does Onam land on a different Gregorian date every year? The Malayalam calendar is lunisolar. Chingam starts at a fixed solar position, but where Thiruvonam falls inside Chingam hangs on the Moon's transit through the nakshatra Shravana, and that moves from one year to the next.
What are the ten days called? Atham, Chithira, Chodhi, Vishakam, Anizham, Thriketta, Moolam, Pooradam, Uthradam and Thiruvonam. Each day the pookalam gets bigger and more elaborate, reaching its fullest form on Thiruvonam.
Is Onam a religious festival? Its roots are in Hindu mythology, yet Malayalis of every faith keep it — Hindus, Christians and Muslims alike — as a secular Kerala harvest festival. Government offices and schools across the state observe the day.
