What is Lorem Ipsum?
Lorem Ipsum has been the go-to placeholder text in design and typography since the 16th century. It comes from a scrambled passage of "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum", a work Cicero wrote in 45 BC. It exists mainly to fill the layout while the real content is not ready yet.

Where Lorem Ipsum actually came from
Lorem Ipsum is not random Latin. It is a scrambled excerpt of De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum (On the Ends of Good and Evil), a philosophical treatise Marcus Tullius Cicero wrote in 45 BC. The familiar opening "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit" is a corruption of the original passage from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 — the very first word, Lorem, is not even a Latin word; it is the second half of dolorem (sorrow, pain), broken across a line.
According to Richard McClintock — a Latin scholar at Hampden-Sydney College who traced the origin in the early 1980s by searching for the rare word consectetur — an unknown printer in the 1500s took a galley of type and scrambled this Cicero passage into a type specimen sheet. The placeholder spread in printing manuals, was popularised again in the 1960s by the dry-transfer brand Letraset, and reached every designer's desktop in the 1980s when Aldus PageMaker shipped Lorem Ipsum as default placeholder copy.
Why typographers still use it
Real English distracts. A reader scanning a mockup will read "Insert headline here" and judge the wording instead of the layout. Latinate placeholder text has approximately the same letter frequency, word length distribution and visual rhythm as Western prose without inviting reading. That is why Lorem Ipsum survived five centuries: it is content-free but visually honest. For accessibility audits and screen-reader testing, however, use real copy — Lorem Ipsum is announced as gibberish and skews results.
FAQ
Does Lorem Ipsum mean anything? Not as printed. The source — Cicero's treatise on ethics — is meaningful, but the scrambled version has been altered enough to be grammatically broken Latin.
How much placeholder text should I generate? For headlines and labels, a few words. For body paragraphs in a typical design mock, 3 to 5 paragraphs of about 50 to 80 words match real-world content density better than a wall of text.
Should I ship Lorem Ipsum to production? Never. The classic CMS horror story is a placeholder paragraph escaping into a live page; Google has indexed thousands of them. Treat Lorem Ipsum as a compile-time artifact, not runtime content.
Are there alternatives? Yes — bacon ipsum, hipster ipsum, cat ipsum and similar variants exist for tone. Outside English/Latin contexts, generating placeholder copy in the actual target language is usually better because letter frequency and average word length differ enough to change line breaks and column widths.
