How to Size Screws for MDF Panels

On MDF, particleboard and chipboard, the fastener you want is a chipboard screw. It has a coarse single-lead thread, a sharp point and a flat or countersunk head. For spacing, a rule that works in practice is to leave 15–20 cm between screws along the joint edge and to set the first one about 5 cm in from each corner. To estimate the count quickly, use N ≈ perimeter / 0.18.

As a starting point, aim for a length of roughly 3 × panel thickness. So 15 mm MDF takes a 4×40 or 4×45 mm screw, 18 mm panels take 4×50 or 4.5×50 mm, and a 25 mm top calls for 5×70 mm. Don’t skip the pre-drill: use a bit at 70–80% of the screw’s minor diameter. Without a pilot hole, MDF tends to split along the edge, and it’s worst near the corners. Brazilian brands such as Tramontina, Mundial, Ciser and Vonder sell calibrated chipboard screws in boxes of 100–500 units.

Applications

It comes up when quoting custom cabinetry, modular kitchens, wardrobes, office furniture, store fixtures or a weekend DIY bench. The point is to let the carpenter pick the right box size on the first trip, so there’s no running short and no leftover pile either.

FAQ

Can I use drywall screws instead? Better not. The fine thread won’t bite into MDF fibres, and the brittle head tends to snap under torque.

Do I really need to pre-drill? Yes, and above all on edges and corners. MDF has no wood grain to soak up the wedge pressure, so it splits radially.

What torque should I use? Keep the drill clutch at a medium setting and stop the moment the head sits flush. Crank it any harder and you’ll strip the soft fibres and wreck the joint.
