Electronic Locks for Residential Doors

A smart electronic lock takes the place of the mechanical cylinder on an external door and lets you in without a key, whether through a fingerprint, a PIN, an RFID tag or a phone app. Sizing it is straightforward: locks = external_doors. In practice that usually means the main entrance, the service door, a home office and any installed safe. Put one device on each access point where you want a record of who opened it and when.

Most home models take 4–6 AA alkaline batteries and run for 6–12 months before you swap them, though heavy daily use and an always-on Wi-Fi link will shorten that. The pricier units talk to Alexa, Google Home and Apple HomeKit, so you can unlock from your phone, hand a cleaner a temporary schedule, or get a ping when someone arrives. In Brazil, the relevant standard is ABNT NBR 14913, which spells out minimum requirements for impact resistance and protection against picking and tampering.

Applications

You see them on the front doors of houses and apartments, on condominium service entrances, on home offices that should stay off-limits, on vacation rentals where each guest gets their own short-lived code, and as biometric covers on safes. Among the models sold in Brazil are the Intelbras IFR Pro, the Yale Y-Tab Pro and the Igloohome, which generates its PINs by algorithm and works offline. That last detail makes it a good fit for a property where the internet is unreliable.

FAQ

What happens during a power outage? Nothing, really. These locks draw from their own batteries rather than the mains, so a blackout leaves them working. Most also keep a mechanical key as a backup and expose 9V battery contacts on the outside for emergencies.

Can the lock be hacked remotely? The established brands protect themselves with AES-128 encryption and rolling codes. Where the risk gets real is with cheap, no-name units. Stay with models that carry Inmetro certification or have a published security audit behind them.

Do I need a locksmith to install? Usually not. Most models fit the standard 60mm backset of Brazilian doors and come with a drilling template. The exceptions are metal doors, reinforced frames and pivoting doors, where a certified installer is the safer call so you don't void the warranty.
