Frequently asked questions

Are the gallon and the fluid ounce in the list US or imperial?
US. The gal (US) is 3.785411784 litres, while the British imperial gallon is about 4.546 litres, nearly 20 percent more. The US fluid ounce is 29.57 mL against 28.41 mL for the imperial one, and the pint splits the same way. If the recipe or the spec comes from the UK, adjust the imperial figure before typing it in, or the result will be off.
In the length category, does nm mean nanometre?
No. Here nm is the nautical mile, 1852 metres, the unit used in navigation and aviation. The length scale runs from millimetre up to kilometre, with no nanometre, micrometre or light year in it. Similar care pays off elsewhere: the knot is one nautical mile per hour, and ha is the hectare, that is, 10,000 square metres.
Why does temperature not use a multiplication factor like the other units?
Because the scales start from different zeros. The conversion applies shifted formulas, F = C × 9/5 + 32 and K = C + 273.15, so 0 °C is not 0 on either one. A practical consequence: nothing stops you from entering a value below absolute zero, -273.15 °C, and getting a negative kelvin, which does not exist physically. Results carry up to 8 significant digits.
