What the scanner picks up

A measurement is a number glued or spaced next to a unit, with a boundary after it, so 10in5 is left alone. Inches accept in, inch, inches and the straight double quote; feet accept ft, foot, feet and the single quote. The pair 5'11" is added up and comes out as one value in centimetres. Ranges written with a hyphen or with to convert on both ends and share the same unit.

Number formats: with both separators, the last one is the decimal, so 1.234,5 and 1,234.5 both read as 1234.5. A comma followed by exactly three digits is a thousands separator; a lone dot is always decimal, so write metric thousands without a dot to avoid 1.500 kg being read as one and a half kilos. The word in followed by an article is treated as the English preposition, never as inches.

Converting measurements without leaving the text

US recipes, drill manuals and product spec sheets arrive full of inches, pounds, cups and Fahrenheit degrees scattered across the sentences. Instead of opening a calculator for each number, paste the whole block: the scanner finds every measurement, converts it and hands back the rewritten paragraph, with a table beside it listing the original value, the converted value and the target unit.

Frequently asked questions

Why did 1.500 kg turn into one and a half kilos?
Because a lone dot is always treated as the decimal separator, the convention of English text, which is where this kind of material usually comes from. For thousands, write it without the dot, as 1500 kg, or use a comma followed by three digits, as 1,500 kg, which reads as one thousand five hundred. When both separators appear in one figure, the last one always wins.
Is the cup the US one or the imperial one?
It is the US cup, 236.588 ml, the measure used in American recipes. A tablespoon is 14.787 ml and a teaspoon is 4.929 ml, also on the US standard. The imperial cup of 284 ml and the metric cup of 250 ml are not part of the table, so check where the recipe comes from before trusting the result in anything sensitive to ratios.
Can I keep the original value in the converted text?
Yes, pick annotate mode. It leaves the snippet untouched and appends the conversion right after it, in the shape 10 ft (≈ 3 m). Replace mode swaps the value outright and produces cleaner reading text. In both cases the yellow highlight lives only in the preview: the copied text comes out with no markup at all.
