Musical scales, the grammar of melody
A scale is an ordered set of pitches that defines the melodic and harmonic vocabulary of a piece. The major scale follows the pattern T-T-S-T-T-T-S (whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half), so C major reads C - D - E - F - G - A - B. The natural minor scale reorders the same intervals as T-S-T-T-S-T-T; A minor is A - B - C - D - E - F - G, the relative minor of C major, sharing every note but treating A as the tonic.
Two variants of the minor scale dominate classical and jazz repertoire. The harmonic minor raises the 7th degree of the natural minor — A harmonic minor is A - B - C - D - E - F - G# — creating a leading tone that resolves strongly back to the tonic. The melodic minor raises both the 6th and 7th when ascending (A - B - C - D - E - F# - G#) and reverts to the natural form descending. The augmented second between F and G# in harmonic minor is the signature "exotic" sound of Middle Eastern, Jewish and Spanish music.
Exotic and synthetic scales
Beyond major and minor, the toolbox includes the blues scale (minor pentatonic + b5, the "blue note"), the chromatic scale (all twelve semitones), the whole-tone scale (six notes a whole step apart, beloved by Debussy and Stevie Wonder's "You Are the Sunshine of My Life"), and the diminished scale (alternating whole and half steps, also called octatonic, a staple of bebop and horror film scores). World traditions add their own: Hijaz in Middle Eastern maqam, Phrygian dominant in flamenco, the Pelog and Slendro scales of Indonesian gamelan. Each carries cultural and emotional associations that no major-or-minor analysis can capture.
Scales, chords and improvisation
Improvising is largely a matter of matching scales to chords. Over a Cmaj7 you can play Ionian (the major scale itself — universal, bright) or Lydian (#4, the "magical" sound John Williams used throughout Star Wars). Over a G7 dominant, Mixolydian (b7, the rock and folk sound). Over Am7, Dorian (Miles Davis's "So What" lives entirely in D Dorian) or Aeolian (the natural minor, melancholic). Over a half-diminished or dominant b9, you reach for harmonic and melodic minor derivatives. The seven modes of the major scale alone cover most popular music; learning them in every key is the cornerstone of jazz pedagogy.
Solfège, Brazilian harmony and practice apps
Western pedagogy uses the solfège syllables do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do (movable do — "do" is whichever note functions as the tonic). Brazilian music, especially Bossa Nova, leans heavily on minor 9 and 13 voicings and frequently borrows the Lydian sound to sweeten major chords — the Jobim aesthetic in a nutshell. For daily practice, apps like Tonal Energy (tuner + metronome + scale playback), Scaler 2 (a plugin that suggests scales for any chord) and Tenuto (ear training) have replaced the old printed manuals.
FAQ
Where should I start learning scales? The major scale in C — it has no sharps or flats and lays out the T-T-S-T-T-T-S pattern transparently. Once it is solid, learn its relative minor (A natural minor) and the cycle of fifths follows easily.
Which scale sounds "happy" and which sounds "sad"? Major scales sound bright and resolved because of the major third between the 1st and 3rd degrees; minor scales sound darker and unresolved because that interval is a minor third. Harmonic minor adds a touch of drama; Phrygian sounds explicitly tense.
Which scale is best for rock improvisation? Minor pentatonic and the blues scale for grit; Mixolydian for the open major-key rock sound; Dorian for a slightly jazzier, modal feel. Most great rock solos blend at least two of these.
What is the difference between a scale and a mode? A scale is a pattern of intervals; a mode is the same pattern viewed from a different starting degree. The seven modes of the major scale — Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Locrian — all use the same notes but treat a different note as home.
