Nail Growth Speed
Computes nail growth in mm per week and time to fully replace a nail.
โ
Nail growth rate
Fingernails put on roughly 0.7 mm/week, which works out to about 3.5 mm/month. Toenails crawl along at half that pace. Only nails in the anagen (active growth) phase move at all. Example: a 5 mm fingernail tip needs about 5 / 0.7 โ 7 weeks to grow out another 5 mm.
Replacing a fingernail end to end takes 4-6 months; a toenail drags on for 12-18 months. Several things slow the whole process down: age, cold weather, poor circulation, and certain illnesses.
Applications
Handy for planning aesthetic routines like manicure and pedicure schedules or gel removal, gauging regrowth after trauma such as avulsion or surgery, and following the treatment of nail diseases like onychomycosis, where the affected portion has to grow all the way out.
FAQ
Do toenails grow at the same rate as fingernails? No. Toenails manage roughly half the speed, around 0.3-0.4 mm/week.
Does diet affect growth? A serious shortfall in protein, biotin, iron, or zinc will hold it back, but piling on supplements past what your body needs won't speed anything up.
How long until onychomycosis is fully grown out? Count on 6 months for hands and 12-18 months for feet, even when the treatment is working.
