The arithmetic behind the life path

You saw the term in a post, wanted to work out your own, and landed on three sites doing three different sums. The life path number comes from adding up the digits of a birth date and reducing the total to a single digit. Type the date in the field and the number appears immediately. Worth saying up front: this page returns the number only, with no interpretation text about personality, talents or purpose.

The method here adds every digit at once and reduces the total down to one digit, stopping if it lands on 11, 22 or 33, the so called master numbers. A second school reduces day, month and year separately before adding them, and the two disagree precisely at the master numbers. For 29 August 1974 the straight sum gives 4, while the split method gives 11 + 8 + 3, which is 22. Neither is official; they are competing conventions.

The field strips anything that is not a digit, so 15/06/1990 and 1990-06-15 return the same value, and there is no date validation at all: type 99/99/9999 and a number still comes out. Double check what you typed and use a four digit year, since a two digit year changes the sum. The part most sites skip: numerology is a symbolic tradition with no scientific basis, fine as a curiosity and never as input for health, money or career decisions.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to enter my full name?
Not for this number. The life path comes from the birth date alone. The calculations built on the letters of a name are different ones, such as the expression and soul urge numbers.
What are master numbers?
They are 11, 22 and 33. By convention the reduction stops there instead of continuing down to 2, 4 or 6. This tool follows that convention.
Another site gave me a different number. Which one is right?
Neither, in any provable sense. They are different calculation conventions: this one sums all digits at once, others reduce day, month and year first.
