Birth Date Numerology — the Life Path Number
In Pythagorean numerology, you get the Life Path Number by adding up every digit of the birth date and then reducing that total down to one digit (1–9). The exception is the so-called master numbers 11, 22 and 33, which you leave alone. The formula is d₁ + d₂ + m₁ + m₂ + y₁ + y₂ + y₃ + y₄, and you keep applying it until what's left is a single digit or one of those master numbers.
Take 1984-03-15 as an example: 1+5+0+3+1+9+8+4 = 31 → 3+1 = 4. That makes the person’s Life Path a 4, a number traditionally tied to discipline, structure and patient work. Much of the modern system comes from Cheiro (William John Warner) and L. Dow Balliett, who worked between the late 19th and early 20th centuries and gave an esoteric spin to the old Pythagorean idea that “all is number”.
Applications
People who work with the Life Path Number tend to use it for self-knowledge exercises and journaling prompts, for compatibility readings against a partner’s number, or to map out what they call “personal cycles”. You'll also run into it in coaching, tarot spreads and astrology charts. Just remember what this really is: a tool for entertainment and reflection. Numerology has no scientific basis, so don't let it steer your medical, financial or legal decisions.
FAQ
Do I reduce 11, 22 or 33? No. They're master numbers, and most schools keep them as they are. A few traditions do reduce them to 2, 4 and 6, but only as a secondary reading.
Does the calendar matter (Gregorian vs Julian)? Modern numerology just uses the Gregorian date you grew up with. You don't need to do any historical conversions for a personal reading.
Is numerology scientific? No. Nothing in the evidence suggests that the digits of a birth date shape personality or destiny. Treat the result as a symbolic exercise, something to reflect on.
