Olympic boxing scoring (3 rounds)
Olympic bouts under IBA run on the 10-point must system: round_winner = 10, loser = 9 (or 8/7 with knockdowns). There are 3 rounds of 3 min, and 5 judges score each one through the computer system, usually 10-9 for whoever took the round. Add up the rounds and the boxer with the higher cumulative total wins.
Boxing has been on the Olympic program since 1904. Brazil's best results came from Robson Conceição (Rio 2016 gold), Esquiva Falcão (London 2012 silver) and Bia Ferreira (Tokyo 2020 silver). Cubans tend to run the pro ranks, while Russians and Uzbeks are the ones to beat at the Olympics. The national federation is CBBoxe, and IBA took over from AIBA after the 2022 corruption scandal.
Applications
Judging at CBBoxe tournaments, Olympic qualification cycles, amateur clubs, sizing up sparring sessions at the gym, and gauging whether a fighter is ready to turn pro.
FAQ
10-9 vs 10-8? A 10-9 is a close round. You give 10-8 when one boxer dominates and scores a knockdown, 10-7 for multiple knockdowns, and 10-6 when the round was a whisker from a stoppage.
Headgear mandatory? Men in the elite category have boxed without it since 2013, but women and youth boxers still wear headgear at the Olympics.
Olympic vs pro? Olympic bouts are 3×3min against 12×3min in the pros. The Olympic style rewards clean punches, while the pro game is more about power and piling up damage.
