Orthodontic Brackets Calculator

Estimates the number of brackets needed for adult orthodontic treatment.

Orthodontic Brackets Quantity Calculator

A fixed orthodontic appliance bonds one bracket to every tooth that needs aligning. For most adults, the plan covers the 20 anterior teeth: 10 on top (6 anteriors and 4 premolars) and 10 below in the same layout, leaving out the third molars. To get the total you just add the two arches, total = upper_teeth + lower_teeth, so a full comprehensive case usually lands at 10 + 10 = 20 brackets, with 4 molar bands added when they're called for.

Brackets come in a few flavors, differing in material and mechanics. Metallic stainless-steel ones are the cheapest and toughest. Ceramic brackets (polycrystalline alumina) look better on visible teeth. Self-ligating types, like the Damon system, drop the elastic ligatures and can cut down chair time. Lingual brackets go on the inner surface of the teeth, so the treatment stays out of sight entirely. In Brazil, orthodontic devices fall under ANVISA's RDC 478/2021, and the procedure can only be done by dentists holding the CFO specialist title in Ortodontia.

Applications

Orthodontic clinics use it to plan inventory, procurement teams to estimate cost per case, and dental schools to size student kits. Patients reach for it too, wanting a clear quote before committing to a treatment that runs 18–30 months on average.

FAQ

How many brackets does an adult treatment use? Usually 20, split 10 upper and 10 lower, which covers every anterior tooth and the premolars. If second molars are involved, expect another 4 brackets or bands.

Are ceramic brackets as durable as metallic ones? Modern monocrystalline ceramics get close, though they're a bit more brittle and run 2–3× the price. Most people put them on the upper arch, where looks count for the most.

Can any dentist install braces? No. Under Brazilian law (CFO Resolução 22/2001), you need the specialist title in Ortodontia, which comes from a 2–3 year postgraduate program recognized by the council.

Gear Tooth Bending Stress (Lewis)

Calculate the bending stress at a gear tooth root by the Lewis equation, σ = F_t ÷ (b·m·Y), from the tangential force F_t (N), the tooth face width b (mm), the module m (mm) and the Lewis form factor Y (dimensionless, a function of tooth count). Lewis's 1892 equation was the first rational treatment of gear-tooth strength and is still the basis of BENDING design. It models the tooth as a cantilever beam fixed at the root: the tangential force transmitted between teeth (from the torque) creates a bending moment that tends to break the tooth at the root — the catastrophic failure where a tooth cracks and snaps. The form factor Y accounts for tooth geometry (gears with more teeth are 'fatter' at the root and stronger, higher Y). The computed stress is compared with the material's bending fatigue strength (with safety factors), since gears endure millions of cycles. The basic Lewis formula is then refined by the AGMA standard with stress-concentration, dynamic, load-distribution and surface-condition factors. It is one of the two fundamental gear design criteria (the other is contact stress). Enter the tangential force, face width, module and Lewis form factor.
