The estimate multiplies width · height · stitch_density, and that density rides on yarn weight and needle size. A few reference totals to anchor things: an adult sweater runs ~1000–1500 m, a bed blanket around 3000 m, a small scarf about 150 m. The weights vary in thickness. Fingering gives roughly 400 m/100 g, DK 250 m/100 g, worsted 200 m/100 g, aran 170 m/100 g, and bulky only about 110 m/100 g. Since a pattern always prints the meters and grams it needs for the suggested weight, swap only between fibers that give you similar yardage per 100 g. Take a 50 × 60 cm scarf in medium-weight yarn: it lands somewhere around 300–400 m, and you'll want to add 10% for swatching and dye-lot safety.
