Yarn Quantity for Knitting cm
Calculates yarn weight needed for a knitted piece based on width, height and stitch.
โ
Yarn quantity by project area
The estimate multiplies width ยท height ยท stitch_density, and that density rides on yarn weight and needle size. A few reference totals to anchor things: an adult sweater runs ~1000โ1500 m, a bed blanket around 3000 m, a small scarf about 150 m. The weights vary in thickness. Fingering gives roughly 400 m/100 g, DK 250 m/100 g, worsted 200 m/100 g, aran 170 m/100 g, and bulky only about 110 m/100 g. Since a pattern always prints the meters and grams it needs for the suggested weight, swap only between fibers that give you similar yardage per 100 g. Take a 50 ร 60 cm scarf in medium-weight yarn: it lands somewhere around 300โ400 m, and you'll want to add 10% for swatching and dye-lot safety.
Applications: knit, crochet and stash control
Hand-knitters and crocheters use it when buying yarn at a local shop or on Ravelry and Etsy. Indie designers reach for it to size yardage across every size in a pattern. And anyone planning a project can check the cost before committing to an expensive fiber.
FAQ
Why buy 10% extra? Two dye lots of the same color can come out subtly different, and anything you frog is yarn you've already used up.
Does the stitch pattern matter? It does. For the same area, cables and bobbles eat 20โ40% more yarn than plain stockinette.
Can I substitute yarn weights? Only if you re-swatch and recalculate. DK and worsted won't behave the same on the same needle size.
