Patron saint feast day by city

In the Brazilian Catholic tradition, every city has a patron saint (santo padroeiro or padroeira). The saint's feast day comes around once a year, and it usually doubles as a municipal holiday under the Lei Orgânica Municipal. Most Brazilian cities go with a Marian devotion (Nossa Senhora under various titles — Aparecida, da Conceição, do Carmo, das Graças, da Penha, and so on) or a male saint such as São Sebastião, São José or São João Batista.

A few examples to anchor this. The city of São Paulo celebrates Nossa Senhora da Assunção on 15/Aug (its See is the Catedral da Sé), Rio de Janeiro honors São Sebastião on 20/Jan, Salvador keeps Nosso Senhor do Bonfim in January, and Belo Horizonte turns to Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem. The dates follow the Roman Liturgical Calendar adopted by CNBB (Conferência Nacional dos Bispos do Brasil).

Applications

Useful for planning trips, setting dates for religious events, checking when a municipal holiday lands, putting together a school calendar, coordinating parish ministries and doing cultural research.

FAQ

Is the patron saint day always a municipal holiday? Most of the time, yes, declared by Lei Orgânica Municipal. Some cities, though, treat it only as a ponto facultativo, so it's worth checking with the Câmara Municipal.

Who picks the city's patron saint? Historically it was the founders or the local diocese. Changing one needs Vatican approval, handled through the bispado.

Why so many "Nossa Senhora"? Marian devotion has run deep in Brazil since colonial days, and it grew even stronger once Aparecida was proclaimed Padroeira do Brasil in 1930.
