What the numbers mean. The Solar Hijri year counts from the Hijra in 622 CE but starts at the March equinox, so year 1405 AP opened on 21 March 2026. Farvardin through Shahrivar have 31 days, Mehr through Bahman have 30, and Esfand has 29 days or 30 in a leap year.

Solar Hijri dates without the off by one year

The Persian calendar counts its years from the Hijra in 622 CE, but it is solar. Instead of slipping back eleven days a year the way the lunar Hijri calendar does, it begins at the March equinox. Year 1405 AP opened on 21 March 2026 with Nowruz. Its structure descends from the Jalali calendar commissioned in 1079 by Sultan Jalal al-Din Malik-Shah, whose panel of astronomers included Omar Khayyam. Iran made the modern version official in 1925, and Afghanistan ran the same skeleton for decades under a different set of month names.

Month lengths are fixed until the last one: Farvardin through Shahrivar have 31 days, Mehr through Bahman have 30, and Esfand closes the year with 29, or 30 when the year is a leap year. The leap rule is the interesting part, because it is not a divisibility test like the Gregorian one. A year picks up its extra day when the equinox falls in a way that forces 366 days, measured at a reference meridian near Tehran. In practice leap years arrive every four years with an occasional five year gap: 1403 was one, and the next is 1408, not 1407.

Two checks you can make elsewhere: 11 May 2026 is 21 Ordibehesht 1405, and 20 March 2025 is 30 Esfand 1403, a genuine leap day. Frequently asked questions

Why does subtracting 621 from the Gregorian year sometimes fail?
Because the Persian year turns over at the equinox, around 20 or 21 March, not on 1 January. From January until Nowruz you are still inside the previous Persian year and the gap is 622, not 621. That is why 1 January 2000 converts to 11 Dey 1378 AP rather than 1379. A converter with a hard coded offset is wrong for roughly a quarter of the year.
Is Esfand 30 a real date?
It is, and only in leap years. Esfand normally ends on the 29th; in a 366 day year it picks up a thirtieth day, always the day before Nowruz. Year 1403 was one of those, so 30 Esfand 1403 corresponds to 20 March 2025. Anyone born on that date gets an exact birthday only every four or five years.
Is this the calendar that sets Ramadan?
No. Ramadan follows the lunar Hijri calendar, twelve lunations adding up to about 354 days, which walks backwards through the Gregorian year. The Solar Hijri calendar is tied to the seasons, so Nowruz always lands at the March equinox. Both count from the Hijra, which is the source of the confusion, but their year numbers sit far apart.
