Generating fictional characters: frameworks for writers, RPG designers, and game devs
A believable fictional character is more than a name and a face โ it is a bundle of traits, contradictions, fears, and history that makes a reader care about what happens next. Whether you are outlining a novel, designing an NPC for a tabletop campaign, or building a cast for an indie game, having a deep, structured profile beats improvising on the fly. This generator focuses on the creative/psychological side of a persona (temperament, backstory, archetype) and not on administrative data like CPF, RG, or address โ for that, use our generic person generator instead.
Below, the frameworks professional writers and game designers actually use, plus the standard "character sheet" sections worth filling in before you write the first scene.
Personality frameworks: MBTI, Big Five, and the Enneagram
There are three popular models for describing personality. Pick whichever your audience and genre already speak:
- MBTI (Myers-Briggs) โ 16 types from four binary axes inherited from Jung: I/E (introvert/extravert), S/N (sensing/intuition), T/F (thinking/feeling), J/P (judging/perceiving). Wildly popular in pop culture but weakly validated scientifically. Excellent shorthand for fiction (INTJ "mastermind", ENFP "campaigner").
- Big Five (OCEAN) โ Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Neuroticism. Each scored on a continuous axis rather than a binary. Backed by decades of empirical research, less catchy, more accurate. Best when you want a character whose traits could shift across an arc.
- Enneagram โ 9 archetypes (Reformer, Helper, Achiever, Individualist, Investigator, Loyalist, Enthusiast, Challenger, Peacemaker) each with a core fear and core desire. Loved by writing communities because the structure naturally produces dramatic conflict.
Jungian archetypes (Pearson's 12)
Carl Jung described the collective unconscious as populated by recurring figures. Carol Pearson codified them into 12 modern archetypes that show up across mythology and brand strategy alike: Innocent, Sage, Explorer, Outlaw, Magician, Hero, Lover, Jester, Caregiver, Creator, Ruler, Everyman. Marketers use this map to position brands; novelists use it to anchor protagonists. The archetype is not a straitjacket โ most rich characters layer two or three.
The standard character sheet
- Physical: height, weight, ethnicity, eye color, hair color, distinctive marks (scar, tattoo, prosthetic, birthmark), posture, voice.
- Background: age, place of birth, social class growing up, family (parents, siblings, marital status, children), education, current job, past careers, hobbies, pets.
- Personality: 3-5 virtues, 3-5 flaws, deepest fear, secret dream, hidden shame, formative trauma, comfort routine.
- Voice: speech patterns (slang, regional accent, verbal tics), preferred topics, conversational defaults (humor, sarcasm, silence).
- Relationships: best friend, rival, mentor, romantic interest, dependent.
- Story function: protagonist, antagonist, foil, mentor, comic relief, threshold guardian.
The wound, the want, and the obstacle
A common storytelling shorthand: every memorable character has a wound (something that happened to them, an unhealed pain), a want (what they consciously chase), and an obstacle (what stands between them and the want). Some teachers add a need โ the deeper truth the character must accept, often opposite to the want. Lay these four out before writing and conflict practically generates itself.
Tools and templates worth knowing
- Notion / Obsidian templates โ many free community character sheets covering all of the above.
- Scrivener character profiles โ built-in template that ships with the writing app.
- World Anvil, Campfire โ full worldbuilding suites with character cards, relationships, timelines.
- D&D 5e character sheet โ the gold standard for RPG-grade stats; useful even outside D&D for any combat-aware fiction.
- Hero Forge โ generates 3D miniatures, doubles as a visualization tool for prose writers.
- Character.ai / NovelAI โ LLM-driven sandboxes where you can "interview" a persona before writing them.
How this differs from our person/data generator
If you need fake but valid CPF/RG/CEP/email for testing a form or seeding a database, use the generic person generator. This tool is for fictional characters โ the kind you put in a novel, a screenplay, an RPG campaign, or a video game. The output is creative, not administrative.
FAQ
Can I use this to fabricate a LinkedIn profile or social account? No. Creating fake identities on real social platforms to deceive others violates their Terms of Service and may be illegal depending on the jurisdiction. This tool is for fiction.
Can I use a generated character in a published book or game? Yes. A generic, fictional character generated procedurally is not protected by anyone's copyright โ you own what you write about them. If the generator accidentally produces a name identical to a real public figure, swap it.
Will the generator produce diverse characters across gender, ethnicity, and orientation? The roll is randomized across configured pools. Many writers run several generations and curate the cast manually to ensure representation matches their project's needs.
Is this enough to write a novel? The character profile is the skeleton, not the body. You still need plot, voice, scenes, and dialogue. Use the persona as a foundation, then let the character contradict it as they live on the page.
How is this different from a "what character are you" quiz? Those quizzes assign you to an existing archetype. This tool builds a brand-new persona from scratch โ useful for creators, not for self-discovery.
