Deworming dose by pet body weight
Most broad-spectrum dewormers are dosed by pet body weight, and the manufacturer's package insert tells you how. Common tablets like Drontal Plus, Endogard or Milbemax work off a reference of roughly 1 tablet per 10 kg, so a 12 kg dog comes out to 1.2 tablets, which you usually round up to 2 given as a single dose. How often you repeat it depends on age and exposure. Puppies and kittens get dewormed every 15 days from 30 days old until 6 months, then it drops to every 6 months for adults in low-risk homes, or stays at every 3 months for pets that go outside, hunting dogs, or houses with small children. Weigh the animal right before you dose it, because too little breeds resistance and too much can be toxic. Never deworm a pregnant female without veterinary supervision: some active ingredients (febantel, praziquantel) come with restrictions, and timing isn't a detail you can skip.
Applications
Tutors and clinics use it for routine deworming of dogs and cats. So do kennels and catteries working under MAPA (Ministry of Agriculture) sanitary protocols, shelters treating rescues in bulk, and breeders getting litters ready for sale. The same number shows up in pre-travel paperwork for IATA flights and Mercosur transit certificates.
FAQ
Can I split a tablet? Yes. Most are scored, and halving a 10 kg tablet for a 5 kg cat is routine. Just cut along the groove so the halves come out even.
What if the pet vomits the tablet? Bring it back up within the first hour and you should repeat the dose. Past that point the drug has probably already been absorbed.
Do indoor cats need deworming? They do. Fleas, raw food, and eggs tracked in on people's shoes still reach them, so treat every 6 months.
Can I deworm a pregnant dog? Only with veterinary guidance. A few compounds are safe after day 40 of gestation, others aren't, and your vet knows which is which.
