Plane Flight Carbon Footprint

Computes per-passenger CO2 emissions on short, medium or long haul flights.

Flight carbon footprint

How much a flight emits comes down to distance, the aircraft, the load factor and the cabin class. For rough reference, count on domestic flights ~0.25 kg CO₂e/km per passenger-km, which run less efficiently because there are more take-offs per km, against international long-haul ~0.15 kg CO₂e/km, where the long, efficient cruise pulls the figure down. A business-class seat takes up far more room, so its per-passenger share roughly doubles. The formula is emissions = distance × factor × class_multiplier. Take a São Paulo–New York round trip of about 15,000 km total: in economy that's roughly 15,000 × 0.15 = ~2.25 t CO₂e per passenger, close to a tonne each way. Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) can trim lifecycle emissions by as much as 80%, yet today it's under 1% of the jet fuel burned worldwide.

Applications

It feeds aviation ESG reporting and voluntary offsetting through providers like Cool Effect, MyClimate and Gold Standard. There's also the mandatory ICAO CORSIA offsetting that kicks in for international flights above the 2019 baseline. Companies lean on it for travel policies, and travellers use it to weigh a flight against rail or a video call.

FAQ

Why is long-haul more efficient per km? Take-off and climb burn a hugely disproportionate share of the fuel. Once the plane settles into cruise, jet engines sip fuel, so when you spread that fixed cost across more kilometres the per-km factor falls.

Should I include radiative forcing? Plenty of methodologies tack on a 1.9× multiplier to cover contrails and high-altitude NOx. What this calculator gives you is the bare CO₂e figure, so multiply by roughly 2 if you want an estimate of the full climate impact.

Does buying an offset cancel the emission? Not really. Your money funds compensation projects, but the molecule still went up the stack. Cutting back in the first place, with fewer flights, economy seats and direct routes, beats offsetting every time.
