Pomodoro Sessions Calculator

Compute total time for a Pomodoro session: 25 min focus + 5 min break, with long break every 4 rounds.

Pomodoro technique: 25 + 5

One pomodoro = 25 minutes of focused work + 5 minutes break. After 4 pomodoros, take a long break of 15-30 minutes. Example: 8 pomodoros = (8 ยท 25) + (6 ยท 5) + (2 ยท 15) = 260 minutes โ‰ˆ 4h20. The method was created by Francesco Cirillo in Italy in the late 1980s; the name comes from his tomato-shaped (pomodoro) kitchen timer. It works by combating decision fatigue and procrastination โ€” the artificial finiteness of the timer lowers the cost of starting and protects deep focus. Popular apps: TomatoTimer, Forest, Pomofocus, Toggl. Common variants: 50/10 (Tim Ferriss), 90/20 based on ultradian rhythm, and 52/17 (DeskTime study).

Applications and context

Heavily used for studying (Brazilian civil service exams, ENEM, bar exam), deep work (Cal Newport), adult ADHD management, remote team coordination and even pair-programming sessions. It's also a useful estimation unit: "this task is about 3 pomodoros."

FAQ

Can I extend a pomodoro past 25 minutes? If you're in flow, the original method says no โ€” finish the pomodoro, take the break, start a new one. Variants like 50/10 are a valid trade-off.

What if I'm interrupted? Cirillo's rule: log the interruption, deal with it after the pomodoro, or invalidate the pomodoro and restart. Internal interruptions are logged; external ones get a quick "I'll call you back."

Does it work for ADHD? Yes โ€” the visible timer and short blocks reduce the executive cost of starting and give immediate reinforcement, helping with task initiation difficulties.
