Rio VLT Trip Time

Estimates Rio de Janeiro VLT light rail travel time from distance at 18 km/h.

VLT Carioca travel time estimator — downtown Rio de Janeiro

The VLT Carioca (Veículo Leve sobre Trilhos) is the modern light-rail line that runs through the heart of downtown Rio de Janeiro. To estimate how long a route takes, use t = d / v + n × parada. Here d is the distance in km, v the commercial speed (around 15–20 km/h in dense areas), n the number of stops, and parada the dwell time at each station (roughly 20–30 s).

The system runs 3 lines across 28 stations, tying together Centro, Lapa, Cinelândia, Praça Mauá and the port area, with connections to the Aeroporto Santos Dumont and the central bus and rail terminals. It opened for the 2016 Olympic Games as part of the Porto Maravilha urban renewal and runs under concession by the Concer/VLT Carioca consortium. Don’t mix it up with the much older Bondinho de Santa Teresa, a heritage tram for tourists that crosses the Arcos da Lapa.

Applications

Getting between Santos Dumont airport and the downtown hotels, mapping out tourist itineraries through Praça Mauá, MAR, Museu do Amanhã and Lapa, or just the daily commute for people who work in the financial and port districts.

FAQ

Is the VLT the same as the Santa Teresa tram? No. The VLT is a modern light-rail vehicle that runs along the flat downtown streets. The Bondinho de Santa Teresa is a historic narrow-gauge tram that climbs the hill, and it’s mostly a tourist ride.

How do you pay the VLT? Contactless cards only. Tap a RioCard, Bilhete Único Carioca or an NFC bank card on the validators inside the vehicle. There’s no cash on board.

Does it run at night? Yes, though less often. Lines operate roughly from 5 a.m. to midnight, and the hours stretch out during big events at Praia de Botafogo and the port area.
