Sport shooting scoring
Under ISSF rules you just add up what each shot is worth: total = 10×N₁₀ + 9×N₉ + ... + 1×N₁. The targets aren't all the same. Air pistol and rifle use a 4.5mm pellet at 10m, there's also 25m and 50m pistol/rifle, and trap and skeet have you breaking clays with a 12 gauge shotgun. Olympic events run 60 shots in qualifying, and the finals switch to decimal scoring, where the inner rings split into 10.0 through 10.9.
Shooting has been on the Olympic program since 1896. Brazil's own Felipe Wu took silver in the 10m air pistol at Rio 2016. The sport is run worldwide by the ISSF (International Shooting Sport Federation), with the CBTE as the Brazilian federation. The disciplines break down into rifle, pistol, shotgun and running target. If you're getting started, air rifle and air pistol are the easiest way in, mostly because the ammunition is cheap.
Applications
Useful for CBTE national tournaments, Olympic prep, military marksmanship training, the ARGEs (Armas Restritas Game Entusiastas) hobby crowd, and the shooting leg of biathlon and pentathlon.
FAQ
Decimal scoring? It only shows up in the finals. A 10.9 is a dead-center hit and 0.0 is a miss. By slicing the 10 ring into 0.1 steps, it gives a much finer way to break ties.
Equipment? An Olympic air pistol from Steyr or Walther starts around $1,500, a rifle from Anschütz or Walther around $3,000, and a competition shotgun from Perazzi or Beretta can run $10,000 and up.
Brazil license? You get your sport shooter (CAC) license through the Exército and the Polícia Federal, and every ammunition purchase is tracked under Decreto 11.366/2023.
