Archery scoring (target circles)

World Archery scores a target like this: total = 10ร—Nโ‚โ‚€ + 9ร—Nโ‚‰ + ... + 1ร—Nโ‚. The face carries 10 concentric rings. The gold center is worth 10/9, red is 8/7, blue is 6/5, black is 4/3 and white is 2/1. Olympic recurve shoots a 122cm target at 70m; compound shoots an 80cm target at 50m.

Archery has been a fixture of the modern Olympics since 1972. Brazil pins its medal hopes on Marcus D'Almeida, a pioneer who took bronze at the 2023 Pan Am Games. The sport is run by CBTARCO at home and by World Archery internationally. Korea has owned it for years, winning 10 of 11 women's team Olympic titles. The compound bow is hugely popular but still outside the Games, and barebow (traditional) shooting keeps gaining ground.

Applications

You will see this scoring at CBTARCO ranking events and the Brazilian Olympic selection trials, in traditional archery among indigenous communities, in IBAMA-regulated bow hunting, and in school sport.

FAQ

X-ring? It is the inner-10, marked with an "X". It still counts as 10 points, but it breaks ties: whoever shot more X's wins.

Recurve vs compound? The Olympics allow only the recurve, which is the traditional bow. The compound, with its cams and cable mechanism, is more accurate but stays out of the Games.

Distance? The Olympic distance is 70m and compound competitions shoot at 50m. Field archery varies, and in 3D the distances are not known in advance.
