TNG-format stardates: how the arithmetic works
The stardates of The Next Generation follow a rule the series writers' guide laid down: five digits, a thousand units per year, and the value 41000 corresponding to the year 2364. The first digit marks the 24th century and the second the season — 41 for the first, 47 for the seventh. It was the way to keep internal consistency after the improvisation of the original series.
In the early seasons of Star Trek the stardates were deliberately inconsistent. Roddenberry told the writers to pick numbers that would not pin down when the series was set, and the result is that they rise, fall and repeat between episodes. Only with The Next Generation did the production settle the fixed proportion that allows conversion to the Earth calendar.
Inverting the rule — a thousand units per year from 2323 — lets you convert any date. One honest consequence: present-day dates come out negative, because we sit almost three centuries before the count's zero epoch. That is not a fault in the tool; it is what the formula returns when applied outside the range it was made for, and the negative number is the correct way to say so.
