How tall is the Statue of Liberty?
Measured from the ground to the tip of the torch, pedestal included, the Statue of Liberty reaches 93 m (305 ft). The statue itself measures 46 m from heel to torch, and the pedestal adds 47 m. Its skin is ~80 tons of copper sheet, only 2.4 mm thick, hung on an iron framework that Gustave Eiffel designed. France gave it to the United States to mark the centennial of American independence, and it was inaugurated on October 28, 1886. Conversion: cm = m · 100, so 93 m = 9,300 cm.
Applications
Handy when you're planning a tourism trip to New York (the Liberty Island ferry, booking crown access), studying the symbology of freedom in class, or sizing it up against other big monuments like Christ the Redeemer (38 m) or the Spring Temple Buddha (128 m).
FAQ
Why is the statue green? When it went up, the copper was a shiny brown. Over the decades it oxidized into a green patina of copper carbonate.
Can you climb to the torch? Not anymore. The torch has been closed to visitors since 1916. You can still reach the crown, though, after 354 steps and an advance reservation.
Who designed it? The sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi shaped the figure, while Gustave Eiffel worked out the internal iron support structure.
