Distance comes from steps × stride length. Average adult stride: ~0.76 m for men, ~0.67 m for women, varying with height. Estimate from height: stride (m) ≈ height · 0.415 (men) or · 0.413 (women). Example: 10,000 steps × 0.75 m = 7,500 m = 7.5 km. The popular 10,000 steps/day target comes from the Japanese "manpo-kei" pedometer marketing of the 1960s — a round number, not science. The WHO recommends 150 min/week of moderate activity (~30 min × 5 days). JAMA studies show 7,000-8,000 steps/day already cut all-cause mortality significantly; benefits plateau around 10-12k. Below 5,000 steps/day is considered sedentary.

How do I measure my real stride? Walk 10 steps in a straight line, measure the total distance and divide by 10. Repeat 3 times and average.
Is 10,000 steps a magic number? No. It is a marketing slogan from a 1965 Japanese pedometer. Modern studies show major gains between 4,000-8,000 steps/day, with diminishing returns above that.
Does running stride equal walking stride? No. Running stride is significantly longer (often 1.2-1.8 m depending on pace), so don't use walking stride for runs.
Why do my watch and phone disagree? Different sensors and algorithms — phones miss steps when in a pocket or bag, while wrist devices may count arm movement as steps.
