You are closing a stanza in redondilha maior, fitting a decassílabo or trimming a campaign line so it lands on the beat, and counting syllable by syllable by hand gets old fast. The method is vowel grouping: the tool drops accents, throws away anything that is not a letter, and counts each run of vowels as one syllable. That gets most words right and fails exactly on hiatus marked by an accent. Because the accent is removed before counting, saúde comes out as 2 instead of 3, país as 1 instead of 2 and poesia as 2 instead of 4. No word ever goes below 1, and a token made only of digits counts 0.

Treat the result as a first estimate and fix the hiatus by hand, since there are only a few per line. Keep in mind that poetic scansion is not grammatical syllable division: verse counting stops at the last stressed syllable and merges vowels across neighbouring words, which this counter does not do.
