Finding the BPM by tapping along
You need a track tempo to set a metronome, dial in a delay or work out a setlist order, and the number is not always written down anywhere. Tapping along is the fastest route: click the big button or hit the spacebar on the pulse of the song, and a BPM shows up from the second tap onward, settling down as you keep going.
Under the hood it keeps your last 8 taps, measures the gaps between them and averages those, then turns the average into BPM with 60000 divided by that average in milliseconds. The moving window is both the trick and the trap: since only the last 8 count, the number adapts if you change tempo, but a pause in the middle enters the average as one huge gap and drags the value down. When that happens, hit Reset and start over.
Tap at least eight times before writing the number down, and tap the pulse rather than the subdivision: tapping eighth notes returns double the BPM. The result is rounded to a whole number, which is plenty for practice; to line it up with a recording, check it against the grid in your audio software. If you want a delay time in milliseconds, divide 60000 by the BPM you found. None of this leaves the browser.
